International Waters

Declaration of the new nation in international waters Photo:Max McClure

International Waters are those parts of the oceans and seas that fall outside of national jurisdiction and that transcend international boundaries. They are also referred to as the High Seas or trans-boundary waters.

There are three areas of International Waters surrounding Svalbard. To the east above Northern Norway and Russia, to the west between Svalbard and Greenland, and to the north toward the North Pole. Despite the tailend of Hurricane Katia, which hampered the advance of the Noorderlicht ship northwards, the expedition team reach International Waters at 80° 14N  10° 30E on 20th September 2011.
